Cruising the Norwegian Fjords: Nature's Cathedral
Entering the Fjordlands
As our expedition vessel turned into the Sognefjord — Norway's longest and deepest fjord, stretching 204 kilometers inland — the scale of the landscape hit us with full force. Sheer granite walls rose over 1,000 meters on either side, their summits lost in clouds, while waterfalls plunged hundreds of meters into the emerald water below.
This was nature on a scale that made us feel wonderfully insignificant.
The Seven Sisters Waterfall
One of the most dramatic moments came in Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As our ship rounded a bend, the Seven Sisters waterfall appeared — seven separate streams cascading down a 250-meter cliff face in unison.
Across the fjord, the Suitor waterfall appeared to raise a bottle in eternal courtship. According to local legend, he has been trying to woo the Seven Sisters for centuries.
Glacier Encounters
A zodiac excursion brought us face-to-face with the Jostedalsbreen glacier — mainland Europe's largest:
- Nigardsbreen arm — We hiked to within meters of the ice face, its blue depths glowing with an almost supernatural light
- The sound of the glacier — groaning, cracking, shifting — was a reminder that this ancient ice is constantly alive
- Our geologist guide explained how these glaciers carved the very fjords we were sailing through over millions of years
"The fjords are the autobiography of ice. Every cliff, every waterfall, every depth tells the story of glaciers past." — Dr. Ingrid Haugen, expedition geologist
Stave Churches and Viking Heritage
Between fjord passages, we explored Norway's cultural treasures:
- Urnes Stave Church — Built around 1130 AD, it's the oldest surviving stave church, with intricate Viking-era wood carvings blending Norse mythology and Christian symbolism
- Bryggen, Bergen — The colorful wooden wharf buildings of this Hanseatic trading port, now filled with artisan workshops and seafood restaurants
The Midnight Sun
Traveling in late June, we experienced the midnight sun — a phenomenon where the sun never fully sets. At 11 PM, the fjords were bathed in a golden, ethereal light that made sleep seem like a waste of precious beauty.
Fresh Norwegian Cuisine
- Gravlaks — Cured salmon with dill and mustard sauce
- Brunost — The famous brown cheese with a caramel-like sweetness
- King crab — Freshly caught from Arctic waters, sweet and succulent
- Cloudberries — Rare amber berries picked from mountain plateaus
Our Fjords & Northern Lights voyages depart from Bergen year-round. Connect with Odyssey Horizon for sailing dates.
