Safari Diaries: Crossing the Serengeti
Into the Endless Plains
The Serengeti's name comes from the Maasai word siringet, meaning "endless plains" — and driving into this vast landscape for the first time, you understand why. The horizon stretches in every direction, broken only by the occasional acacia tree standing like a sentinel against the golden grassland.
Our Odyssey Horizon expedition started in Arusha, where we met our guide, Joseph — a third-generation Maasai who grew up on the edge of the Serengeti and knew the land like the back of his hand.
The Great Migration
We timed our visit to witness the Great Migration, one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles:
- Over 1.5 million wildebeest moving in massive columns across the plains
- Accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles
- Crocodile-filled river crossings that had us holding our breath
- The thundering sound of hooves that you feel in your chest before you hear it
"The Serengeti doesn't perform for tourists. It simply continues the cycle it has followed for millennia. We are privileged witnesses." — Joseph, our guide
Face to Face with the Big Five
Over five extraordinary days, we encountered all of Africa's Big Five:
- Lion — A pride of twelve lounging beneath an acacia at dawn, the cubs play-fighting while the lionesses kept watch
- Leopard — Spotted at dusk, draped elegantly across a tree branch with its kill
- Elephant — A matriarch leading her family to a watering hole, the babies tumbling between their mothers' legs
- Cape Buffalo — A massive herd of over 500, kicking up dust clouds visible from miles away
- Black Rhinoceros — The rarest sighting, a solitary male grazing in the early morning mist
Nights Under the Stars
Our luxury tented camp at Serengeti Under Canvas offered an experience that blurred the line between adventure and comfort. Each evening:
- Sundowners on the kopje as the sky turned pink
- Bush dinners by lantern light with gourmet African cuisine
- Stargazing sessions with crystal-clear views of the Milky Way
- Falling asleep to the distant calls of hyenas and lions
The Maasai Connection
A visit to a Maasai village near the Ngorongoro Crater was deeply moving. The community welcomed us with traditional songs and dances, shared their pastoral way of life, and showed us how their ancient wisdom works in harmony with the ecosystem.
Our Serengeti & Beyond expedition runs annually from June to October. Reach out to Odyssey Horizon to secure your place.
